Penn State No. 1 in first women's RPI ranking

Penn State was No. 1 in the first RPI ranking of NCAA Division I women's teams released by the NCAA last week.

[RPI] The Nittany Lions, who have since won two more games to improve their record to 11-2-1 overall and 5-0-0 at the halfway point in the Big Ten, led Pac-10 powers Stanford and USC at No. 2 and No. 3.

UCLA and Texas, the No. 1 teams in the Soccer America Top 25 rankings this week and last week, were No. 14 and No. 18. Defending national champion North Carolina, which has already lost three games, was No. 8.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was Samford of the Ohio Valley at No. 32. Notre Dame, last year's NCAA Division I runner-up, was only No. 40.

The ranking of all 314 teams -- Howard was last -- was generated on Oct. 9.

The RPI -- Ratings Percentage Index -- is used by the NCAA to determine which teams will receive at-large bids into the NCAA tournament following the regular season.
