Rosenborg Fires Coach After Stunning CL Victory

One day after Rosenborg recorded one of its greatest Champions League victories, a 2-0 win at home over Spanish giant Valencia, the Norwegian team announced the sacking of its coach, Knut Toerum. The decision came after a meeting between the club's board and Toerum following the victory over Valencia, a two-time Champions League finalist.

Rosenborg chairman Terje Svendsen said Toerum's departure was due to the club's poor results in the Norwegian league and had been mutually agreed upon. Rosenborg is sixth in the league, having already conceded its league title to Brann Bergen. Toerum will remain coach until the end of the season.

"Rosenborg has always been about team work, and it would have been wrong to keep on holding on to the position as head coach," Toerum said. "As I leave, I can think back on a lot of positive experiences with Rosenborg."  Among them, certainly, will be Rosenborg's defeat of Valencia in the Champions League, where the picture looks decidedly rosier for the Norwegian club. Rosenborg is now second in Group B with four points after three games, three behind leader Chelsea.
