[PAC-10] UCLA continued its recent domination of USC, knocking off the Women of Troy, 2-0, before 3,345 fans in Westwood on Friday in a battle of No. 1 and
No. 5 teams.
UCLA got a pair of second-half goals from
Lauren Cheney and
Kara Lang to capture the nightcap
of a doubleheader that began when UCLA's men knocked off Oregon State, 2-1.
"It's fantastic," said UCLA head coach
Jillian Ellis, who is now
9-0-1 in matches against USC. "We were excited for this game and we hung in there and got the result. USC came out and had us on our heels, but we regrouped in the second half and came out on top.
It was a great team effort."
Cheney's goal gave her seven in her last five games and 17 on the season -- to rank first in the Pac-10. The shutout was the fifth in a row for the Bruins in
Pac-10 play.
The only down note for UCLA was that both
Catherine Calvert and
Caitlyn Mac Kechnie were
injured in the second half and did not return. Calvert was hit in the back on a play in the USC box. Mac Kechnie suffered a knee sprain.
The attendance for the doubleheader was second in
the record books for UCLA's men's and women's programs behind the crowd of 3,466 in 2001 for another doubleheader.
