Broome women claim first national crown in any sport

Two second-half goals by Emily Dixon gave Broome (N.Y.) Community College a 2-1 victory over Gloucester County (N.J.) College in the NJCAA Division III Women's final on Sunday in Herkimer, N.Y.

For the top-ranked Hornets, it was their first National Junior College Athletic Association Division III title in any sport.

Broome had entered the national finals with a 111-6 scoring margin and had not trailed since the third game of the season, but it fell behind in both games at the final four.

After trailing early on a own goal, the Hornets crushed host Herkimer, 7-2, thanks to a four-goal barrage in a 22-minute period.

Texas powerhouse Richland's took third with a shootout victory over Howard (Md.) Community College in the consolation game.
