Lightning doesn't deter Golden Hurricane

Top-seeded Tulsa got an early goal by Eric DeFreitas to stand up as the Golden Hurricane beat host UAB, 1-0, in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA men's tournament in Birmingham, Ala.

Tulsa, ranked No. 7 in the latest Soccer America Men's Top 25 rankings, had to wait a day to get in its game against the Blazers. Wednesday's game, the last of four quarterfinal matches, got underway but was delayed due to lightning and eventually postponed.

The Golden Hurricane dominated the Blazers, holding a 13-3 edge in shots. In his first start of the season, TU keeper Tyrel Lacey had to make only one saves.

The loss ended a disappointing season for the Blazers, who finished 7-11-1. Injuries took their toll on UAB, which at one point went eight games without a win.

Tulsa will face fourth-seed South Carolina on Friday night in one semifinal. FIU and Marshall meet in other semifinal. In major upsets, FIU knocked off No. 2 seed SMU and Marshall beat No. 3 seed Kentucky, both by 3-1 scores.
