Boston College completed an ACC double -- its first regular-season and tournament championships since joining the conference in 2005 -- by beating top-ranked Wake Forest, 2-1, in Sunday's final in
Cary, N.C.
The Eagles opened up a two-goal lead thanks to goals by Trinidadian
Sherron Manswell in the 37th minute and
Mike Konicoff in the 47th minute, and
Chris Brown did the rest.
Wake Forest held a 15-3 edge in shots, but they could only beat the
6-foot-5, 225-pound Brown once.
Justin da Luz scored the only Demon Deacon goal in the 69th minute, scoring off a corner kick by
Evan Brown.
Otherwise, Chris Brown, younger brother of veteran keeper
Adin Brown, held Wake at bay, making
three of his four saves in the second half.
"We went through a lot to get us where we are now," said BC coach
Ed Kelly. "The kids have matured and
they are working very hard and this has been a really great season so far. It was a great victory for Boston College."
BC star
Charlie Davies was
named the 2006 ACC Player of the Year but turned pro with one year of eligibility remaining and signed with Swedish club Hammarby.
Manswell -- the ACC Tournament MVP -- and transfer
Alejandro Bedoya -- the 2007 ACC Player of the Year -- have more than made up for the loss of Davies.
