North Carolina's 3-2 loss to Notre Dame marked the third time in the last four years that the Tar Heels had lost at home in the third round or quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Women's Tournament. The Tar Heels, winners of 18 of the first 25 NCAA championships, had never previously lost before the semifinals.
