It's been over a year since ground was broken on Red Bull Park in Harrison, N.J. Since then, design and construction delays have severely hampered the stadium's progress, leaving the project pretty
much where it started 14 months ago. However, Frank Giase of the Newark Star Ledger says the official word from Camp Red Bull is that everything is now back online, which means that New York should
have a new home within the next 18-20 months, or mid-summer 2009.
The announcement follows the energy drink maker's purchase of the remaining 50 percent stake in the stadium that
used to belong to L.A. Galaxy owner Anschutz Entertainment Group. The change to full ownership brought other changes, too. Red Bull Park will now be a soccer-specific stadium, which means there will
be no concert stage to obstruct spectators' view. The number of luxury suites has also been slashed from 50 to 30. The biggest change is a new translucent roof covering every seat instead of the
partly-open roof in the prior plans.
"We had a specific vision we wanted and AEG had their vision, and we couldn't come to an agreement on the final design," de Grandpre said,
although he wouldn't reveal the cost of the final design. "The intimate experience was critical for us and it wasn't as important for AEG. We want fans to experience the game the way it should be."
Red Bull Park was expected to cost $200 million. It will be part of a larger $1 billion development project in Harrison.
