Adams powers UCLA past Portland

[ELITE 8] No. 1 UCLA has joined North Carolina and Massachusetts as the only teams to reach the semifinals of the NCAA Division I Women's Tournament five straight years when the Bruins outlasted Portland, 3-2, Friday night in a battle of West Coast powers.

Forward Danesha Adams scored her second goal of the game, drilling a header off a corner kick in fourth minute of the second overtime to send the Bruins into Friday's semifinals against archrival USC at the Women's College Cup in College Station, Texas.

Adams, who had earlier tied the score at 1-1 after dribbling through four opponents, outjumped the Portland defense and buried freshman Lauren Barnes' corner kick past former Bruin Kelsey Davis in the Portland goal.

"It was a great service in and I just went up and said, 'You know what, I'm going to finish this right now,'" added Adams. "I just went up for it. Kelsey had a great game, but it was our time."

The result extended UCLA's unbeaten streak to 22 games and ended Portland's string off 11 straight wins.

Another corner sunk the hearts of the Westwood faithful. Pilot midfielder Angie Woznuk was able to convert it in with the outside of her foot, tying the match in the 89th minute.

"Giving up that goal feels gut-wrenching," said UCLA coach Jillian Ellis. "But to come back, that's the greatest lesson for these guys at this point. They showed that they can bounce back. I told them before the overtime period, that we just controlled the second half of the game and now we have to finish it. This was tremendous."
