Franklin Pierce and Tampa take NCAA D2 titles

After five women's titles, Franklin Pierce finally won its first NCAA Division II men's championship, and Tampa, winner of three men's crowns, won its first women's title at the 2007 Division II championships in Orange Beach, Ala.

Franklin Pierce beat Lincoln Memorial, 1-0, on English grad student David Clifton's goal in the 88th minute -- his ninth goal of the 2007 postseason and 10th career goal in the postseason, both NCAA Division II records.

"For everyone involved in the program," said Ravens coach Marco Kooiman, "it's been a long hard battle, but I am proud, happy, and delighted for our school."

In just its 10th year of existence, Tampa won the NCAA II women's championship with a 3-1 shootout victory over five-time national champ Franklin Pierce after the game went scoreless following regulation and two overtime periods.

Shannon Aitken turned away the first three FPU shots in the shootout, while Shelby Kuni, Megan Tobin and Ashley Flateland all scored.
