Capello Overtakes Mourinho as England Frontrunner

The English press might still be pining for Jose Mourinho, but the London Times says that former Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has become the frontrunner to take over as England coach. According to the report, Mourinho has had a late change of heart, and is now setting his sights on coaching one of Europe's leading clubs -- most likely AC Milan. Apparently, the former Chelsea manager has been irked by several weeks of hesitation on the part of the English Football Association.

Meanwhile, sources said that Capello's lawyer is on his way to London to meet with the FA this week, indicating perhaps that the deal is close to being finalized -- although the British organization maintains that its still mulling other options. It should be noted that Mourinho hasn't officially taken himself out of the running, although the Times believes that the mixed messages coming from his camp indicate "a cause for concern rather than hope."

Apparently, one of the major sticking points was Mourinho's insistence that the FA meet with him in Portugal, rather than him going to London to conduct the interview. Mourinho's stubbornness might have turned the FA off, but there's also the rumor that AC Milan wants to replace Coach Carlo Ancelotti with the Portuguese at the end of the Serie A season. Sources close to Mourinho have often said that his first choice is to coach a big club in either Italy or Spain.
