New York a Family Decision for Osorio

Family had a lot to do with Juan Carlos Osorio's decision to take the New York Red Bulls head-coaching job, says Ives Galarcep of the North Jersey Herald. Not only do the former Chicago Fire coach and his wife have family in the area, but Osorio also saw New York as the perfect opportunity to bring his sick mother over from Colombia to live in one of the area's large Colombian communities.

Having said that, the New York Red Bulls staff had to work hard to convince the Colombian to leave Chicago, a team he had only been with for six months. The Fire didn't want to let him leave. After all, this was a guy who turned around a last-placed team, leading it all the way to the MLS Eastern Conference final. Chicago GM John Guppy definitely didn't want to see him go, placing a hefty compensation package on his head, but the Red Bulls wanted him badly enough to comply.

Some might say that Osorio's resume isn't that extensive: he has experience as an assistant in New York and England (five years), and then two years as a head coach in Colombia and Chicago. Having been the assistant coach of the best teams in New York's MLS history -- the 2000 MetroStars -- Osorio is now back to take the Red Bulls even further.
