5. FA CUP: Arsenal survives two missed penalties

Arsenal was given a scare at Bolton Wanderers before prevailing, 3-1, in overtime Wednesday to advance to the round of 16 of the English FA Cup.

Swedish sub Fredrik Ljungberg scored the winning early in the second overtime after Bolton had tied the score on a 90th-minute equalizer from defender Abdoulaye Meite. Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who had opened the scoring in the 13th minute, put the game away in the closing seconds with his second goal.

In a game filled with misses chances, Arsenal botched two penalty kicks. Captain Gilberto Silva missed in the second half with the Gunners leading 1-0 and fellow Brazilian Julio Baptista missed another penalty for Arsenal when it was 2-1 up. Adebayor could have put the game away five minutes from time when he struck the post with an empty net at his mercy.

Bolton's Stelios Giannakopoulos and Kevin Nolan both hit the woodwork.
