Accent on attack

Lauren Cheney, the 2007 Soccer America Women's College Player of the Year, is among seven collegians whom new U.S. women's national team coach Pia Sundhage called up for a six-day training camp Jan. 3-8 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

Sundhage will select 20 players to travel to Foshan, China, for the 2008 Four Nations Tournament against Canada, Finland and host China Jan. 16-20 at the Foshan Sports Center Stadium.

Also called up was Cheney's UCLA teammate, midfielder Tina DiMartino, and forward Amy Rodriguez, whose two goals led USC to a 2-1 win over the Bruins in the semifinals of the recent Women's College Cup.

Other 2007 collegians called in for the camp are Stephanie Cox (formerly Lopez) and Angie Woznuk of Portland, North Carolina's Tobin Heath, Virginia's Becky Sauerbrunn.

Cox is the only one of the collegians who played for the USA at the 2007 Women's World Cup. All the others except for Sauerbrunn are attacking players.

All but five players who went to China for the 2007 Women's World Cup were named to the squad.

Defender Kate Markgraf and midfielder Aly Wagner continue to rehabilitate injuries. Defender Tina Ellertson is pregnant with her second child.

Captain Kristine Lilly has not yet decided if she will pursue a spot on the roster for what would be her fourth Olympic games. Marci Miller Jobson was recently named the Baylor University women's coach.

Heather Mitts, who missed China '07 because of a knee injury, also continues her rehabilitation.
