Younger Adu Chases a Different Dream

He may not be surrounded with the glittering hype that hangs over his older brother Freddy, but Fro Adu is on his way to achieving a different kind of first for the Adu family: a college degree. Fro, a 15-year old high school senior has recently accepted an offer to play at George Mason University next year. Sure, NCAA Division 1 soccer certainly isn't the pros, but Fro's young age makes it all the more remarkable.

"First of all, it's great because I'm going to college," the younger Adu told ESPN Soccernet. "That makes my mom happy because Freddy didn't go to college. He did the soccer thing." You'd think being Freddy Adu's younger brother would be quite a tough act to follow, but Fro seems to take it all in stride. "Some people would think I would be jealous and stuff like that, but that's just not the type of people that we are," he said, adding that his primary goal at school is to complete his degree. Fro's mom, who he says is a huge influence in his life, wants to see him become a doctor.

Meanwhile, Pete Mehlert, Adu's club coach, says he's more than ready for college soccer. ""George Mason is very lucky to be getting his service as a player," Mehlert said. "He's a born leader. He makes our team play more like a team. He's a two-way player on the field. He helps out on the attack and defends. He organizes his teammates."
