Florida Southern player killed in car crash

Meghan Kelly, a junior on Florida Southern women's team, was killed and twin sister Melissa Kelly, also a member of the Moccasins' team, seriously injured Monday when the car Meghan was driving was hit by a semi truck that ran a red light on U.S. 27, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The sisters were returning to Florida Southern in Lakeland from their hometown of LaBelle, located in southwest Florida.

Melissa, a defender, played in 11 games and Meghan, who was a midfielder/forward, played in eight this past fall, as the Moccasins went 12-7-1, compiling the best record in the program's history.

Both were majoring in physical education and had earned perfect 4.00 grade point averages for the fall semester.
