Terry: Becks Should Captain England Against Switzerland

L.A. Galaxy midfielder David Beckham on Monday received a boost from England captain John Terry, who said he would gladly cede the captain's armband to Becks if it helps the national team recover its form under new coach Fabio Capello. The Italian's first job comes at Wembley next month against Euro 2008 co-host Switzerland. Prior to that, Capello will have to name his captain; the likes of Terry, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Beckham will be in consideration.

"It would be great for David's family for him to have the armband, that would top the night off for him," Terry said of the Switzerland game. "He is a great player and a great lad to have around the place. We hope that not only does he play his hundred but many more after that. But it does not matter who is captain. It is a decision I will fully respect whatever happens. The most important thing is making England great again. If we can get back to winning ways it will make everyone happy."

Beckham, of course, still has his detractors. Wales coach John Toshack, a former coach of Real Madrid, said Capello should play Becks for 10 minutes, let him win his 100th cap, "and then say to him 'thanks and goodbye'."
