Players galore picked in Supplemental Draft

[MLS WATCH] Most of the players expected to be picked in the SuperDraft who weren't selected did get snagged in the Supplemental Draft held Thursday by conference call, and they weren't alone. The 14 teams picked 51 players, with only Toronto FC showing restraint.

TFC took Ohio State striker Xavier Balc - one of the SuperDraft Snubbed - with its first pick and passed in the other three rounds. Nine teams picked one player apiece in each of the eight rounds and Chicago, which had accumulated extra picks through trades, grabbed six.

Among those prominent names not picked in the SuperDraft who did find a team in the first Supplemental round are forward Kevin Forrest (Washington), taken by Colorado; defender Brandon Owens (UCLA), en route to D.C. United; and midfielder Pat Healey (Towson State), picked by Kansas City.

FC Dallas claimed Virginia forward Yannick Ryering in the second round, and Chivas USA picked up North Carolina State striker El-Hadji Cisse in the third phase. Real Salt Lake and D.C. United each took three players, FC Dallas came away with two.

Teams are permitted to start training Saturday, though some will commence next weekend. Teams are permitted to carry 18 players on the regular roster and 10 more on a developmental squad, and by March 3 they must be roster and salary-cap compliant, with the cap number reportedly set at approximately $2.2 million, though the league has not confirmed any official figure.

Houston and Los Angeles will be the first teams to play real games. They contest the Pan Pacific Championship against J-League and A-League competition in Hawaii next month. Houston and D.C. United open play in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup in March.
