Sundhage makes big cuts

[U.S. WOMEN] U.S. women's national team head coach Pia Sundhage has reduced her roster to 26 players who are training at the Home Depot Center to prepare for the 2008 Algarve Cup, which will be held March 5-12 in southern Portugal.

Former University of North Carolina player Kacey White, who has been playing in Sweden, is the lone newcomer.

The following players who were not retained after participating in the mega-camp: defenders Marian Dalmy, Amy LePeilbet, Becky Sauerbrunn and Brittany Taylor, midfielders Jen Buczkowski, Tina DiMartino, Lindsay Huie, Sarah Huffman, Noelle Keselica, Joanna Lohman and Manya Makoski and forwards Tiffany Weimer and Christie Welsh.

The four matches at Algarve Cup are the next international games for the USA and the final official matches before it enters the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament being held April 2-13 in Juarez, Mexico.

The top two finishers in that competition will qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
