Red Bulls Have Nearly $1 Million to Spend

Big Apple Soccer does the math following the departures of Dema Kovalenko and Francis Doe, figuring that the New York Red Bulls now have at least $800,000 of cap room to fill, as seven players have left the team since the end of last season. However, the figure doesn't include new money for players like Seth Stammler, who received pay raises since then.

The seven who departed are as follows: the retired Ronald Wattereus ($200,000), Markus Schopp ($175,000), Dema Kovalenko ($197,375), Santino Quaranta ($105,312.50), Clint Mathis ($100,000), Francis Doe ($48,000), and Elie Ikangu ($17,700). Mathis' salary assumes that the Red Bulls only had to pick up $100,000 of his $410,000 salary after his trade from the Colorado Rapids before the 2007 season. Midfielder Dave van den Bergh ($214,583.33) could be the last Red Bulls player to depart prior to the start of next season. If so, the club would have more than $1 million to spend under the cap.

Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio said he expects to have some new players by the team returns from its training camp in Salzburg, Austria, on March 7.
