Yamaguchi leaves Florida State for Sweden

In a first for women's college soccer, Florida State's Mami Yamaguchi, the 2007 Hermann Trophy winner, is foregoing her final year of collegiate legibility to pursue a pro career abroad.

The Japanese international has signed a contract to play with the Damallsvenskan's Umea IK, arguably the most powerful women's club in the world. Led by Brazilian superstar Marta, Umea has won 62 games, tied two and lost two over the last three league seasons. Umea IK also captured the UEFA Women's Cup in 2003 and 2004.

"We are thrilled for Mami," stated Seminoles coach Mark Krikorian.  "It has been a goal and dream of hers to be a professional soccer player.  In a way, I hope that Florida State University has contributed to her success."  

Yamaguchi led the country in points (66) in 2007, while finishing second in goals (24) and assists (18).
   
The junior forward paced the Seminoles with three goals and eight assists in the NCAA Tournament, leading them to the championship game, where they fell to USC, 2-0.
