Red Bull's Kassel signs with Maryland

Maryland has landed one of the country's top men's prospects in Matt Kassel, but there's a chance that the midfielder from Bridgewater, N.J., may never play a game for the Terrapins.

Kassel is a member of Red Bull New York's youth program and attended a preseason mini-camp. He's eligible to be signed by the Red Bulls under the terms of MLS's new policy allowing clubs to sign players they have developed in their academy programs.

"Matt is an extremely gifted midfielder," says Maryland coach Sasho Cirovski. "He has an exceptional feel for the game and plays with a commanding personality. Matt has two good feet, passes extremely well, and has great instincts around the goal."

Kassel is part of an incoming freshman class that includes former U.S. U-17 national team goalie Zach MacMath, midfielder Karou Forbess, who played for Little Rock FC after moving to Arkansas from Japan and more recently for Dallas power Solar, Michigan prep star Casey Townsend and Alex Lee, a soccer and basketball star at Maryland's Magruder High School.

Other recruits are midfielder/forward Conor O'Leary (Rochester, N.Y.), midfielder/forward Matt Oduaran (Bear, Del.), and midfielder/defender Tommy Schaeffler (Edgewater, Md.).
