TFC Coach: 'The Worst Performance I've Ever Seen'

Toronto FC capped off a poor showing in the Carolina Challenge Cup with a 2-0 loss to tournament host Charleston Battery of the United Soccer League. The MLS club finished winless and in last-place with a 0-2-1 record behind the San Jose Earthquakes (3-0-0), the Battery (1-1-1) and the New York Red Bulls (0-1-2).

Last place may be nothing new to Toronto FC, which had the worst record in MLS last season, but new coach John Carver was stunned by how poorly his team played against the Battery, in particular. "We're very, very, very disappointed," TFC head coach John Carver said after the match. "In all my years in the game, that's the probably the worst performance I've ever seen. The only consolation is that there's no Marvell Wynne, no Maurice Edu and no Carl Robinson ... I could be here a month trying to explaining that poor performance."

Carver consolations Wynne and Edu were with the U.S. U-23s at the Concacaf Olympic qualifying tournament, while Carl Robinson was on a personal leave of absence back home in Wales. Tyler Hemming, Tyler Rosenlund and Andrea Lombardo were also on Olympic qualifying duty with the Canadian U-23 team.
