Croatian dies of head injuries after hitting sideline wall

[OBITUARY] Croatian Hrvoje Custic died on Thursday from injuries suffered on Saturday when he hit his head on a concrete wall during a First Division match.

Custic, 24, was going for the ball during Zadar's game with Cibalia Vinkovci at home when he slid off the field and hit a wall supporting the fence that separates the stands from the field.

He had surgery but died five days later at a Zadar hospital from brain injuries.

Custic, a former Croatian U-21, had briefly played for two other First Division teams, Hajduk Split and FC Zagreb, before returning to Zadar, where he started his career.

All Croatian league matches for this weekend have been postponed.
