United's Marcelo Gallardo ($1.87 million) are the league's top earners, while the highest earning Americans are New York midfielder Claudio Reyna ($1.26 million) and Los Angeles attacker Landon Donovan ($900,000). MLS's minimum senior salary is $33,000 while players on developmental contracts earn between $12,900 and $17,700.

About 70 players, who are on developmental contracts, earn less than $20,000 per year.

More than 40 players earn the minimum senior salary of $33,000.

While Gallardo is the highest-paid player in D.C. United history, Washington Post reporter Steven Goff points out that the rest of the club's roster combines for $2.3 million.
