Impact opens Stade Saputo in pouring rain

[USL] The Montreal Impact opened its new Stade Saputo on Monday, and the game drew a sellout crowd of more than 8,000 despite pouring rain. The Impact tied the Vancouver Whitecaps, 0-0, in a battle of the league's two Canadian franchises.

The Impact has sold more than 4,500 season tickets for 2008. The stadium was built at a cost of $15 million.

Joey Gjertsen and Dwight Barnett had breakaways for the Impact but couldn't beat Whitecaps goalkeeper Srdjan Djekanovic.

"There is a mix of emotions right now because we wanted to win today for the whole organization," said Nick De Santis, who was making his 125th appearance as head coach of the Impact. The players showed they wanted to win today. It's unfortunate, we have to be patient because we faced a team that was well organized defensively and we caused them problems."
