The Montreal Impact opened its new Stade Saputo on Monday, and the game drew a sellout crowd of more than 8,000 despite pouring rain. The Impact tied the
Vancouver Whitecaps, 0-0, in a battle of the league's two Canadian franchises.
The Impact has sold more than 4,500 season tickets for 2008. The stadium was built at a cost of $15
million. Joey Gjertsen
and Dwight Barnett
had breakaways for the Impact but couldn't beat Whitecaps
goalkeeper Srdjan Djekanovic
"There is a mix of emotions right now because we wanted to win today for the whole organization," said Nick De Santis
, who was making his 125th appearance as head coach of the Impact. The players showed they wanted to win today. It's unfortunate, we have to be
patient because we faced a team that was well organized defensively and we caused them problems."
