Ike Kuhns earns media award

[HALL OF FAME] Veteran Newark Star-Ledger sportswriter Ike Kuhns has been selected to receive the 2008 Colin Jose Media Award and will be honored during the National Soccer Hall of Fame's Induction 2008 Weekend Aug. 1-3 in Oneonta, N.Y.

Kuhns served the Northern New Jersey region as a soccer writer from the 1960s and covered the North American Soccer League's New York Cosmos during their heyday. He also covered soccer for Soccer America.

"Ike Kuhns adds another highly respected media representative to the Colin Jose Media Award." Hall of Fame President Steve Baumann said. "His contributions to the reporting of soccer are well-recognized and the length of his service is astounding. Just recently, in one of those wonderful coincidences since we did not release this information to the Selection Committee, Ike has been sharing his memorabilia and archives with the Hall of Fame. His materials are significant and, when future writers come to research the era Ike covered, his archives will add another important perspective to soccer in America."

With one of the largest sports sections among the newspapers in the New York metropolitan area, the Star-Ledger provided more coverage soccer than most newspapers.

Kuhns joined the Star-Ledger in 1965 and retired in 2001.
