Manchester City is persisting in its bid to sign Brazilian midfielder Ronaldinho with an offer that would bring his salary close to $400,000 per week, making him the best-paid player in the
world.
"Extensive talks over the weekend concluded with Ronaldinho mulling over a contract," reports The Guardian. The rumored salary "would smash City's wage structure, but would
be partly funded by various sponsors and Thai backers." Manchester City is owned by former Thai Prime Minister and multi-millionaire businessman Thaksin Shinawatra.
City has also
just signed Brazilian striker Jo for $36 million from CSKA Moscow, subject to the striker getting a work permit, said the team's Executive Chairman Garry Cook. Ronaldinho, however, "is seen as the
showman who would guarantee full houses." Cook conceded that the Ronaldinho deal was "nowhere near completion, but the most important thing is that he wants to get back and play football. He wants
to show the world he is the greatest player. At the moment, though, we're just ticking off the boxes."
