River Plate clinched the Argentine Clausura championship last weekend on the penultimate game day with 2-1 win over Olimpo on two goals by 20-year-old
midfielder Diego Buonanotte
. It gives River Plate its first title after an eight-season drought, during which archrival Boca Juniors lifted two titles.
River Plate is coached by
former Argentine midfielder Diego Simeone
, 38, who guided Estudiantes to the league title in 2006 less than a year after retiring from as a player.
River Plate has now won 33
league titles, 11 more than the second most successful club, Boca Juniors.
The Argentine league plays a split season each year -- the Apertura and Clausura. River's last championship
win came in the Clausura 2003/04 season.
