River Plate back on top

[ARGENTINA] River Plate clinched the Argentine Clausura championship last weekend on the penultimate game day with 2-1 win over Olimpo on two goals by 20-year-old midfielder Diego Buonanotte. It gives River Plate its first title after an eight-season drought, during which archrival Boca Juniors lifted two titles.

River Plate is coached by former Argentine midfielder Diego Simeone, 38, who guided Estudiantes to the league title in 2006 less than a year after retiring from as a player.

River Plate has now won 33 league titles, 11 more than the second most successful club, Boca Juniors.

The Argentine league plays a split season each year -- the Apertura and Clausura. River's last championship win came in the Clausura 2003/04 season.
