USA soars over first hurdle to South Africa

The USA had prepared with friendlies against England, Spain and Argentina - three matches in which the Americans failed to score. Meeting Barbados on Sunday, for their first game of 2010 World Cup qualifying, must have felt like a clash against a Sunday league pub team - and it sure looked like it. Within a minute, Clint Dempsey scored the first goal of a 8-0 rout. A walk in the park next Sunday in the second leg will send the USA into the semifinal group stage of Concacaf qualifying for South Africa 2010. The first-leg win set a couple of U.S. records and included some unique moments. ...

* The eight-goal win margin was the largest in U.S. national team history. It surpassed the 8-1 win over the Cayman Islands on Nov. 14, 1993.

* Clint Dempsey's goal 53 seconds after kickoff was the fastest strike in USA history. Dempsey finished after receiving a long, well-flighted pass from Carlos Bocanegra. (1-0)

* After a bit of pinball set off by a Steve Cherundolo cross in the 12th minute, Michael Bradley struck from close-range for his second career U.S. goal. (2-0)

* Brian Ching scored his first U.S. goal since last summer after Pablo Mastoeni's 23-yard rocket hit Ching, who had his back to the shot, in the shoulder and deflected into the net. Landon Donovan had done a nice job of feeding Mastroeni. (3-0)

* Mastroeni had to leave the game in the 26th minute with a strained left glut muscle. He was replaced by Freddy Adu.

* Donovan scored in the 59th minute on a quickly taken 30-yard free kick, sending the ball into the corner of the net while Barbados goalkeeper Alvin Rouse was preoccupied setting up the wall. The goal upped Donovan's U.S. scoring record to 36 goals. (4-0)

* Dempsey scored his second of the day by finishing a rebound created by a Ching shot. (5-0)

* Eddie Johnson ended his one-year U.S. scoring drought with a header off Heath Pearce's cross in the 81st minute. (6-0)

* Not that the USA needed any gifts, but Daryl Ferguson gave it an own goal - misdirecting Eddie Lewis' cross, in the 86th minute. (7-0)

* Ching scored with actually trying to off a Cherundolo cross in 89th minute to complete the rout. (8-0).

* Brad Guzan, starting in goal in place of Tim Howard (lower back strain), did not need to make a single save.
