EURO '08: Unimpressive Germany advances to quarterfinals

[AUSTRIA-GERMANY REPORT CARD] Needing just a tie against co-host Austria, which required a victory to advance, to reach the quarterfinals, Germany prevailed, 1-0, in the scrappy affair thanks to Michael Ballack's 25-yard free kick early in the second half.

The game had more dubious moments than highlights: Germany's Mario Gomez missing the open net from two yards, the dismissal of both coaches after they squabbled with each other, and Austrian midfielder Rene Aufhauser escaping ejection after striking Lukas Podolski in the face.

Soccer America's Mike Woitalla grades the players.
