Hyndman Leaves The College 'Comfort Zone'

It's often asked why more coaches don't leave college soccer for MLS, and there are usually two easy answers -- better money and job security. New FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman, however, has opted to leave what he admits is "the comfort zone" of the college game after more than two decades at Southern Methodist University.
 
"I've been at Southern Methodist University for 24 years," said Hyndman, "and it's been a very comfortable position for me. I could be there for the next 10 years. So why make that move into a situation where it's going to be a bit more risky? I think it's because all of us that are competitors...we all strive to do something special, and I think this is that opportunity to do something special."
 
Hyndman spoke about "truths of the game," writes Tobias Xavier Lopez, as well as "the potential for Dallas to play soccer in a beautiful possession style." The new coach favors a 4-4-2 formation over 3-5-2 because Dallas has "played well, but sometimes they gave up soft goals, and that could be because they don't have enough people back there." He also brought in former Real Salt Lake coach John Ellinger to serve as his first assistant, and will retain interim coach Marco Ferruzzi and goalkeeper coach Drew Keeshan.
