Conference champions picked to defend titles

[PRESEASON WOMEN'S POLLS] Defending champions Charlotte (Atlantic-10) and Hawaii (WCC) have been tabbed to repeat as their women's conference champions, while Marist, last year's MAAC women's regular-season champion, has been picked to win the 2008 MAAC title.

ATLANTIC-10: Charlotte tied a school-record with 16 wins en route to its first-ever A-10 championship. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Brown, a second-team all-conference selection last season, is one of eight starters and 19 returning letterwinners for the 49ers.

MAAC: Marist finished with 91 points in the MAAC poll, just one point ahead of 2007 MAAC champion Loyola (Md.). Fairfield's Nicole Cavallaro, the 2007 MAAC Rookie of the Year, has been chosen as the 2008 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year.

WAC: Hawaii was selected to repeat as Western Athletic Conference champion in 2008 and swept the Players of the Year awards. The reigning WAC Offensive Player of the Year, Ambree Ako, garnered Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honors, while her  teammate, Tehane Higa, took home a share of the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honor along with Utah State's defensive ace Lindsey Smart.
