Onyewu scores twice, Bocanegra flops

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Oguchi Onyewu and Carlos Bocanegra, the first-choice central defenders on the U.S. national team, had contrasting fortunes with their European clubs. Onyewu scored two goals within 15 minutes and almost had a third as Standard Liege won the Belgian Super Cup with a 3-1 victory over Anderlecht. Bocanegra was less fortunate, earning a miserable rating of "3" -- on a scale of 1-10 -- from France Football for his French Ligue 1 debut in Rennes' 4-4 tie with Marseille.

[VIDEO] Onyewu scored both goals off corner kicks by Salim Toama -- the first with his knee and the second with his head -- for Standard and was also responsible for the penalty kick that Anderlecht converted in the second half. Next up for Standard, the Belgian league champion, is the first leg of its UEFA Champions League qualifying series against Liverpool, but Onyewu is suspended.

Before almost 29,000 fans, Rennes got off to a flying start at home when it went ahead in the sixth minute, but Marseille's Ivorian signing, Bakari Kone, beat Bocanegra five minutes later and scored the first of three goals OM would put past Rennes in the first half an hour. In a wild finish, Rennes drew even on an OM own goal in the 90th minute, Marseille went back ahead two minutes into stoppage time, then Rennes made it 4-4 a minute later.

Like Standard, Rennes has a midweek European date. The French club faces Stabaek of Norway Thursday in the first leg of their UEFA Cup second qualifying round series.
