Soccer invasion to hit West Virginia village

Soccer will take over the village of Barboursville, W. Va. the next two years when it will host the U.S. Youth Soccer Region I Championships.

According to the 2000 census, Barboursville has a population of 3,183 -- and that's about as many motel rooms that have been reserved for the tournament.

Games will be played on 22 soccer fields at Barboursville Park and the YMCA Kennedy Center.

In 2009, the championships will be held from July 2-7. The dates for 2010 will be July 1-6.

The tournament will attract 272 boys and girls teams, ages 12-19, from 15 states throughout Region I.

Marshall University will host the opening ceremony at Edwards Stadium and provide about 750 dorm rooms.
