[UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE]
Barcelona (surviving without Olympic gold-medalist Lionel Messi
), Liverpool (needing a goal in the 118th minute to beat Standard Liege and its American star,
), Arsenal and Juventus all won as expected their Champions League qualifying series, while upstarts Aalborg (Denmark), Anorthosis Famagusta
(Cyprus) and BATE Borisov (Belarus) qualified to enter Thursday's group stage draw in Monaco.
Aalborg won at Kaunas of Lithuania, 2-0, thanks to Kasper Risgard
double and won the series, 4-0, over Kaunas, which two players sent off in the second leg. Aalborg was captained by American Dan Califf
during its run to the Superliga title. He left for Midtjylland over the summer.
BATE had upset Levski Sofia, 1-0, in Bulgaria and went through after tying, 1-1, at home. Levski
Sofia coach Velislav Vutsov
had resigned immediately after the first leg. BATE was the first Belarussian side to advance to the third stage of Champions League
qualifying, let alone the group stage.
Anorthosis' stunning 3-0 victory over Olympiakos in the first leg stood up as it went through despite losing, 1-0, in Greece. It is the
first Cypriot club to advance to the group stage.
Anorthosis' multi-national team is coached by a Georgian, Timur Ketsbaia
, and consisted of
two Frenchmen and two Greeks and one player each from Albania, the Netherlands, Poland, Serbia, Montenegro, Portugal and Cyprus in the starting lineup on Wednesday. UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE (Third Round, Second Leg)
