With Turk Nihat Kahvec
(18 goals), Italian-American Giuseppe Rossi
(11) and French midfielder Robert Pires
out with injuries and Jon Dahl Tomasson
sold to Feyenoord,
Villarreal's offseason signings will play an important role in its attack.
American Jozy Altidore
is just one of three new signings who could make
contributions when the Yellow Submarine, surprise runner-up to Real Madrid last season, opens the new La Liga campaign in Pamplona against Osasuna on Sunday.
Altidore could team up with
Argentine-born Mexican Guillermo Franco
Villarreal also signed Argentine playmaker Ariel
from Mallorca and forward Joseba Llorente
from Real Valladolid.
There has been talk that Altidore might be loaned Real Valladolid,
but the injury to Rossi, who sprained his left ankle during training on Tuesday, could mean Villarreal will keep him, at least until the winter transfer window opens in January.
