TEST FOR YOUNG AGGIES. The new-look Texas A&M Aggies get an early test when they host No. 2 North Carolina.
With heavy graduation losses, A&M
started four freshmen -- defender
Brianne Young, midfielders
Beth West and
Rachael
Balaguer and forward
Jennifer Kmezich -- in its opener against Rhode Island. West scored and Young and Kmezich had assists in the Aggies' 3-2 win.
Transfer
Alyssa Mautz, who came off the bench, also scored.
The Aggies downed North Carolina, 1-0, in 2006 before an NCAA women's regular-season
record crowd of 8,204 in College Station. They met against last year in Chapel Hill, where UNC came out victorious, 2-1.
"No matter who our opponent is," said Coach
G Guerrieri, "we have to improve and we have to get better. That's our emphasis this week, coming out to push each other and help our teammates get better. This is
a game that people won't expect us to win because of the history, because they have a hall of fame coaching staff and they have so many players who have national team credentials in their
background. We really have the maximum respect for the way that they go about their play, the way that they prepare and the way that they compete. It will be a great challenge and a good early
season evaluation to see how we stack up against a team that is generally regarded year in and year out as being one of the top teams."
