America has a 70-61 edge over Guadalajara in series wins, but Chivas came into the game as the favorite. It won the Torneo Apertura in December and had lost only one of its first nine games in the Torneo Clausura that began in January. It was coming off a 1-1 tie with D.C. United Thursday night in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals in Washington, D.C. Guadalajara, which started 10 of 11 starters from Thursday's game at RFK Stadium, had not lost at Azteca Stadium since the 1999 Invierno quarterfinals.
Club America, on the other hand, has been hit by injuries and struggled in recent weeks. America took the lead on Villa's goal, its first goal in the last 294 minutes, and goalie Guillermo Ochoa made several key saves to preserve the win.
