4. AMERICANS ABROAD: Big win for Tim Howard

Goalkeeper Tim Howard and Everton celebrated a 1-0 win over Arsenal and moved into sixth-place, within the UEFA Cup qualification zone. But keeper Brad Friedel and Blackburn went down, 2-1, against 19th place West Ham, whose American defender Jonathan Spector stayed on the bench. Manchester City's 2-0 win at Middlesbrough eases its relegation fears; it's four points above the drop zone. DaMarcus Bealsey came on for City in the 84th minute.

Reading, with keeper Marcus Hahnemann in goal, tied Portsmouth, 0-0, and dropped to 8th place. In Fulham's 0-0 tie at Wigan, Fulham's Brian McBride started and was subbed in the 67th minute, Carlos Bocanegra went the full 90, but Clint Dempsey stayed on the bench. Oguchi Oneywu went the full 90 as his 11th place Newcastle United fell, 2-0, at relegation-threatened Charlton.

In English second tier play, Sheffield Wednesday defender Frank Simek, who has been called into U.S. national team camp, was red-carded in a 2-2 tie with Wolverhampton.

In Mexico, Michael Orozco made his sixth straight start and went the full 90 for San Luis in its 2-0 win over Cruz Azul. Edgar Castillo made his eight appearance of the season for Santos in a full-game performance in its 3-3 tie with Atlas.

In Germany, Borussia Moenchengladbach, with Kasey Keller in goal, fell 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen and dropped to last place, five points deep in the relegation zone. Kamani Hill, 21, made his fourth Bundesliga appearance as an 87th minute sub in Wolfsburg's 3-1 win over VfL Bochum. Wolfsburg is in 10th place. Seventh-place Hannover 96, with Steve Cherundolo, played to a scoreless tie with Hamburg SV. Suspended Gregg Berhalter and injured Josh Wolff missed 1860 Munich's 3-1 loss to Augsburg in the German Second Division.

In Denmark, Heath Pearce and Nordsjaelland tied first place FC Copenhagen, 1-1, and Robbie Russell helped Viborg tie Broendby, 1-1.

In Chile, Chase Hilgenbrinck and Nublense tied Union Espanol, 2-2.
