MORNING BRIEFING: Six remain perfect

No. 1 Wake Forest, the defending national champion, is one of six Division I men's teams that are still perfect after three weeks. Drake, Western Illinois, Evansville, Loyola (Md.) and Appalachian State will all face big tests soon.

Here's a look at the rest:

DRAKE (6-0-0).
Big win: Won its sixth straight game by shutout with 1-0 win at Green Bay even though Bulldogs lost goalie Michael Drozd 18 minutes into the game. Big star: Garrett Webb leads Drake with three goals and three assists. Big test: Drake face Cal Friday and Stanford Sunday in Palo Alto.

WESTERN ILLINOIS (6-0-0).
Big win: Beat Bradley, 1-0, in overtime. Big star: Martin Browne Jr. (three goals and four assists). Big test: The Leathernecks travel to Oakland (5-1-0) on Sept. 27.

EVANSVILLE (5-0-0).
Big win: Handed Butler its first loss with 3-2 win on Sept. 7. Big star: Sophomore forward Mike Luttrull, Offensive MVP at last weekend's ProRehab Aces Classic, already has scored five goals. Big test: The Aces face UC Santa Barbara Friday and Cal Poly Sunday.

LOYOLA (MD.) (5-0-0).
Big win: Won Charles Street showdown with 2-1 win over Towson on Sept. 7. Big star: Goalie Milos Kocic has been the MAAC's Defensive Player of the Week two out of three weeks. Big test: The Greyhounds head to Niagara to play at its new stadium in a key MAAC clash on Oct. 10.

APPALACHIAN STATE (4-0-0).
Big wins: Captured a pair of overtime decisions over Gardner-Webb (1-0) and Winthrop (2-1) last weekend. Big star: Arie Muniz has four goals in four games. Big test: First-year coach Shaun Pendleton will lead the Mountaineers against Wake Forest on Sept. 24.

MONDAY NIGHT.  No. 17 Providence was held to a 0-0 tie by Northeastern Monday night.  The Friars, who are off to their best start since 2005, move to 3-0-2. PC goalkeeper Timothy Murray stopped three shots to earn his fourth shutout of the season and the 12th of his career.
