Freshman
Luke Norman's goal in the 23rd minute was the only goal No. 1 Wake Forest scored on Wednesday night, but it was good enough for a 1-0 victory over
Appalachian State at Spry Stadium.
The victory for Wake Forest extended the team's winning streak to a school-record 12 games. The win also improved the team to 7-0-0, which equals the
best start in school history.
One streak that was broken was
Marcus Tracy's scoring streak. He had scored in each of the Demon Deacons' first six
games.
Goalie
Collin Taylor was outstanding for Appy, one of the most improved programs in the country under first-year coach
Shaun Pendleton.
"I'm happy we got the result we were looking for," Wake coach
Jay Vidovich said. "We got to play
a lot of people, so hopefully we'll be ready for our next match. We're in a tremendous stretch right now going from California to playing a good Appalachian State team and now heading off to
Maryland."
UNC PREVAILS. No. 18 North Carolina also got a scare against a Southern Conference opponent when it needed a goal by freshman
center back
Sheanon Williams in the 81st minute and a save by goalie
Jacob Wescoe on a penalty kick five minutes
later to beat Elon, 2-1.
