MORNING BRIEFING: UCLA held by Santa Clara

No. 2 UCLA was held to a 0-0 tie by unranked Santa Clara on Thursday evening at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The Bruins' best chance came in just the second minute of play when senior midfielder McCall Zerboni hit the post.

Despite having to settle for their second scoreless draw of the year, the Bruins (7-0-2) were able to add to their consecutive shutout streak, posting their eighth in a row.

TALLAHASSEE UPSET. No. 15 Virginia edged No. 8 Florida State, 1-0, on Meghan Lenczyk's goal in the 13th minute.

"I am so proud of this team and this performance," said Virginia coach Steve Swanson. "To come back from a disappointing performance last week at West Virginia and put forth this type of a game in this environment against an opponent like this a great testament to our team."

HEATH HAT TRICK. Tobin Heath's first-half hat trick gave No. 6 North Carolina a 5-2 win at Clemson. Julie Bolt scored two goals for Clemson.

No. 11 Duke and No. 14 Boston College played to a 0-0 tie, as did No. 13 West Virginia against St. John's in Big East play.

Juniors Sarah Winslow and Allie Sadow each scored a goal as No. 12 Wake Forest opened ACC play with a 2-0 victory over Maryland.

No. 22 Cal beat BYU, 2-1, on two goals from freshman defender Danielle Brunache.
