MORNING BRIEFING: Freshman leads Michigan State

With 12 goals in 11 games, freshman Laura Heyboer has been a big reason why Michigan State is 10-1-0 and ranked No. 20 in the country.

MSU's 10 wins in 11 games this season is the fastest any Spartan team has reached the 10-win plateau in program history.

Last weekend, Heyboer had a goal and an assist in the Spartans' 2-0 win over previously unbeaten and untied Minnesota and added two goals in a 4-0 win over Iowa.

Heyboer, who starred for national youth power Force FC, isn't the only major contributor for the Spartans.

Lauren Hill has scored nine goals, and Cara Freeman has eight.

MSU head coach Tom Saxton most most pleased that other players contributed in the win over Iowa. MSU was playing without senior Kristi Timar, who hurt her leg in the Minnesota game.

"Getting two wins this weekend was crucial," said Saxton. "It gives us more confidence heading into two tough road games next weekend."

The Spartans will be back in action Friday when travel to Illinois. They then play Purdue Sunday.
