MORNING BRIEFING: A-Rod breaks out

U.S. Olympic gold-medalist Amy Rodriguez scored the first hat trick of her collegiate career when she scored three goals in No. 5 USC's 7-0 win over Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday.

Sophomore Ashli Sandoval added two goals and two assists for the Trojans, who have won five games in a row.

-- No. 6 North Carolina beat No. 9 Duke, 3-0, in a battle of ACC rivals. Freshman Courtney Jones scored her seventh goal of the season to give the Tar Heels the lead in the fifth minute, and they put the game away with two late goals by Casey Nogueira.

-- No. 11 Virginia improved to 3-0-0 in the ACC with a 6-0 win over N.C. State. Freshman Lauren Alwine led the Cavs with a goal and three assists.

-- Finn Sanna Talonen scored a golden goal to give Florida State a 1-0 win at Maryland. She scored on a flick header off a quick free kick by Sarah Wagenfuhr.

-- No. 12 Boston College had four different players -- Caitlin Hiler, Brooke Knowlton, Julia Bouchelle and Alyssa Pember -- score in a 4-1 win over visiting Miami (Fla.) in ACC play.
