MORNING BRIEFING: Santa Clara sinks

Santa Clara, one of the great names in women's soccer, suffered two more losses -- 5-0 to Stanford and 2-0 to Arizona  -- in its final two non-conference games of the season and fell to 3-7-2.

Things have gotten so bad for the Broncos that they couldn't muster a shot in the second half against Stanford and gave up a goal to Arizona after only seven seconds of the first half.

"We started out flat," said SCU coach Jerry Smith after Sunday's loss. "Arizona passed the ball 11 or 12 times with no tackles from us. We're struggling physically and we're psychologically beat up. We had a really tough game on Friday and Arizona was well rested. Our focus is
now on the WCC. We need to rest up and recover this week and have a good start in league play."

Weekend hat trick stars included:

-- Freshman Lindsay Taylor, who scored her first hat trick for Stanford against Santa Clara;

-- Casey Nogueira, who followed up on her two goals against Duke on Thursday night with three goals in North Carolina's 4-2 win over Wake Forest.

-- Sophomore Sinead Farrelly scored a hat trick in the first half to the lead Virginia past Clemson, 7-1.
