The Buckeyes battled unbeaten UIC to a 0-0 tie Wednesday night in front of a record crowd of 2,438 at Flames Field. With 15 minutes remaining, Buckeye German Gomez hit the crossbar. The Flames created their best opportunity in the 106th minute when Kevin Stoll hit the far post, and the rebound went to a waiting Baggio Husidic, who dove toward the ball and just missed placing it on the scoring side of that same post.
REACTION. "It was big-time college soccer," said UIC coach John Trask. "If you talk about the bigger events in the country, this was a big event. It was a spectacle. To see where this program has come and how it electric it was here tonight...I just pray that the students understand that a 0-0 game in soccer can be extremely exciting."
"UIC is an excellent team," Ohio State coach John Bluem said. "They are very skillful and for the first 70 minutes or so, they really played well and had us under quite a bit of pressure for that time. We struggled to find answers, especially in the first half."
CREIGHTON 1 MEMPHIS 0
The Bluejays established a school record with their sixth consecutive shutout in a 1-0 victory over Memphis Wednesday night at Morrison Stadium. Thomas Gjoesund earned his first start of the season and scored his first goal of the year to move the third-ranked Bluejays to 8-1-1 on the season Goalkeeper Brian Holt's scoreless streak is at a school-record 650 minutes.
AKRON 2 OAKLAND 1
A header by Matt Tutich off a Ben Zemanski free kick in the 61st minute lifted the Zips past Oakland. Steve Zakuani, the nation's leading points scorer, scored his 11th goal of the season, striking in the first minute. The Golden Grizzlies responded in the 19th minute on a goal by Stefan St. Louis.
REACTION. "Oakland is a very good team that went to the NCAA Tournament last year," said Akron coach Caleb Porter. "We knew heading into the game that we were going to have a battle because they are a hungry team. We approached tonight like we would an NCAA Tournament game."
ST. JOHN'S 4 SYRACUSE 2
Tadeu Terra and Joel Gustafsson tallied their first goals of the season 44 seconds apart for St. John's in the 16th minute to erase an early Syracuse. Former U.S. U-17 forward Ryan Soroka notched his first goal of the season in the 49th minute to break a 2-2 tie and Bjorn De Hoop added a late goal on a free kick. Kyle Hall and Hansen Woodruff scored in the first half for the Orange.
PROVIDENCE 1 CONNECTICUT 0
Matt Marcin scored the lone goal of the game following a cross by Ryan Maduro to hand the Huskies their third loss in their last four games. They have been shut out four times and scored only seven goals in their last 10 games.
TULSA 2 KENTUCKY 1
Chris Taylor put Tulsa ahead in the 57th minute, and nearly 20 minutes later Diego Henriquez hit a great cross that a Wildcat defender accidentally put in the net for an own goal. Tulsa improved to 3-0-0 in Conference USA play.
REACTION. "We were disciplined and patient, and showed a lot of maturity in our play," Tulsa coach Tom McIntosh said. "Kentucky is a good team that is well organized and plays to counter, which made us work for the win."
UC SANTA BARBARA 2 CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 2
The Gauchos went ahead twice on goals by David Walker and Chris Pontius, but they could not put Northridge away. First, Ben Cox even the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute and then Milan Radovic scored into an empty net.
CAL STATE FULLERTON 0 UC DAVIS 1
Senior Quincy Amarikwa scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season off a free kick in the 49th minute as UC Davis extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games.
NOTRE DAME 3 MICHIGAN STATE 0
Bright Dike and Michael Thomas scored one goal and one assists apiece to lead the Irish past MSU. Notre Dame had lost its two previous games but dominated the Spartans with a 17-6 edge in shots.
REACTION. "I thought our first-half performance was very good," said Notre Dame coach Bobby Clark, "even though we just got the one goal. I felt we really controlled the game."
SMU 1 SOUTH CAROLINA 1 (OT)
Blake Brettschneider gave South Carolina the lead in the 65th minute, but Manuel Mariel equalized on a penalty kick 35 seconds later. SMU had a big edge in shots (21-10), but Jimmy Maurer was outstanding in goal for the Gamecocks.
