MORNING BRIEFING: Portland and North Carolina 1-2 in women's RPI

Portland and North Carolina, No. 4 and No. 5 in this week's Soccer America Women's Top 25, are No. 1 and No. 2 in the first NCAA Women's Division I RPI index the NCAA released this fall.

Soccer America No. 1 Notre Dame is No. 5 in the RPI index, while No. 2 Stanford is No. 3. SA No. 3 UCLA is 11th in the RPI rankings.

The RPI -- Ratings Percentage Index -- is the most important of the criteria it uses to determine the 48-team field for the NCAA Division I Men's Tournament. The RPI is a mathematical formula designed to objectively compare results and strength of schedule.
