MORNING BRIEFING: Scoring stars on fire

It was big night for the nation's top goal scorers. Akron's Steve Zakuani has his second hat trick in less than two weeks to give him  the national lead with 14 goals. UC Davis star Quincy Amarikwa, who scored in the Aggies' 2-2 tie with Cal State Fullerton, and Michigan State's Doug DeMartin, who scored twice in a 3-1 win over UIC, are only one goal behind with 13 goals. Even last year's leading scorer, O'Brien White, got into the act with two goals for Connecticut.

AKRON 8 WRIGHT STATE 0
Sophomore Steve Zakuani has his second hat trick in less than two weeks for the Zips, who have won seven in a row. Matt Tutich scored a goal in his fourth straight game and racked up three assists while freshman Teal Bunbury recorded the second two-goal game of the season by finding the net twice in the second half. Bunbury also assisted Tutich's score for the last goal of the game, coming in the 84th minute.

REACTION: "We wanted to play to our potential tonight - that was our goal heading into the game," said UA coach Caleb Porter. "The best teams play their best soccer at this time of year and we were firing on all cylinders tonight."

SETON HALL 1 ST. JOHN'S 3
Freshman Joakim Helland, Trevor Chiduku and Nelson Becerra for the Red Storm in a non-conference game between the local Big East foes.

REACTION: "Seton Hall is a very talented team and this was a hard-fought win," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "Our depth helped us once again tonight and we were able to put together some great offensive plays."

UC DAVIS 2 CAL STATE FULLERTON 2
Sophomore Miles Hadley and senior Quincy Amarikwa scored goals in the 76th and 80th minute, respectively, to help the Aggies overcome a two-goal deficit and secure a tie that extends their unbeaten streak to 11 games. Shay Spitz and Joshua Meyer had given Fullerton a two-goal lead.

MICHIGAN STATE 3 UIC 1
Two second-half goals by Michigan State's Doug DeMartin were the difference in East Lansing. David Hertel gave the Spartans the lead in the ninth minute, but UIC equalized on Charlie Trout's penalty kick on the half-hour mark.

CONNECTICUT 2 DARTMOUTH 1
After going scoreless in its last three games, UConn won the non-conference game thanks to two goals by O'Brian White. The 2007 Hermann Trophy winner now has six goals for the season. Freshman Tony Casio had assists on both goals. Dartmouth's lone goal of the game came in the 22nd minute when Donnie Surdoval, scored on a header off Andrew Olsen's corner kick.

UC IRVINE 0 CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 0 (OT)
The Anteaters had 22 shots, but Northridge keeper Kevin Guppy came up big with nine saves.
